SUMP Türkiye - EU Support for Promoting Sustainable Urban Mobility in Turkish Cities
The expansion of SUMP is "Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning". SUMP Türkiye is a three-year project co-financed by the European Union and the Republic of Türkiye. The project began in August 2022, with the final beneficiary being the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye (UMT).
The main goal of SKUP Türkiye is to promote the transition from individual transportation modes to sustainable, accessible, and inclusive mobility modes at both national and urban levels.
The project's realization includes the following objectives:
- Supporting policy dialogue: on sustainable urban mobility among national and European stakeholders.
- Strengthening the capacities of municipalities in sustainable urban mobility and related issues, considering EU principles and best practices.
- Coordinating the national leg of the European Mobility Week (EMW) campaign by conducting activities that encourage high participation from municipalities across Türkiye.
SUMP Türkiye advances with a three-stage approach for the adoption of sustainable urban mobility practices by the Turkish government and municipalities.
In the first stage, it focuses on identifying obstacles to sustainable urban mobility practices and provides stakeholders with recommendations on how to overcome these obstacles.
In the second stage, it systematically structures the sustainable urban mobility planning process by identifying effective tools and methods.
In the third stage, it supports municipalities in creating long-term, sustainable SKUPs and accelerates the adoption of sustainable urban mobility practices.
Concrete outcomes of the SUMP Türkiye project include:
Green Paper Preparation: A Situation Analysis is prepared to suggest legal, institutional, and policy changes to support sustainable urban mobility in Türkiye. It is presented in the format of a Green Paper.
White Paper: Developed with contributions from key stakeholders, the White Paper includes current and potential issues, sustainable urban mobility recommendations for Türkiye, national goals, and steps to achieve EU goals.
Policy Dialogue: Establishing a long-term policy dialogue on sustainable urban mobility between key stakeholders in Türkiye and their counterparts in Europe.
