ABOUT EMW
What is the European Mobility Week Campaign?
European Mobility Week is a branded project celebrated by the European Commission since 2002 between September 16-22. The main aim of the week is to encourage all relevant decision-makers to provide more support for sustainable urban mobility. Additionally, it invites all municipalities and citizens through municipalities to take measures related to sustainable transportation, thereby increasing awareness in this regard.
Throughout the week, the goal is for relevant authorities to improve municipalities, transportation planning, and public transportation systems. Citizens are encouraged to choose alternative transportation methods over individual vehicles.
The impact of the European Mobility Week, organized for 21 years, is growing both in Europe and worldwide. During this week, municipalities implement projects focusing on mobility management, accessibility, and new or improved bicycle infrastructure. The last day, September 22, features the "Car-Free Day" event.
Throughout the European Mobility Week, municipalities are encouraged to renew their registration and upload good practice activities they will carry out to increase awareness of sustainable urban mobility at this address (European Mobility Week Registrations). Municipalities that organize events, take sustainable measures, and commit to participating in the "Car-Free Day" on September 22 are awarded the title of "Golden Participant."
In addition to the activities within the European Mobility Week, sharing activities related to promoting pedestrian and cycling transportation on social media between September 16-22 using hashtags such as #EuropeanMobilityWeek, #MobilityWeek, and the tags of the theme of the year will increase visibility.
Furthermore, by following the social media accounts of European Mobility Week (See end of page), interacting with these accounts, and using methods such as reposting and tagging the page, visibility will be enhanced.
What are the Activities and Permanent Measures of European Mobility Week?
"Permanent Measures" cover all works that have become permanent within the perspective of sustainable urban mobility. Considered activities include the construction and maintenance of bicycle parking areas, the construction and expansion of bicycle paths, the development and maintenance of green areas, measures taken for individuals with special needs to move comfortably in traffic, and the improvement and popularization of public transportation networks.
What is the "Car-Free Day" Event?
During the annual "Car-Free Day" celebrations held globally on September 22, designated areas are closed to traffic, allowing access only to public transportation vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. An evaluation is made throughout the day on how this practice affects city life.
What is a "Golden Participant"?
Municipalities that register for the European Mobility Week, commit to organizing events, take sustainable measures throughout the week, and participate in the "Car-Free Day" on September 22, are entitled to the "Golden Participant" title.

European Mobility Week Türkiye
The urban population in Türkiye is continuously increasing, leading to more vehicle ownership. This results in individuals spending more time in traffic in their daily lives, causing an increase in air and noise pollution and, consequently, health issues. Now, all of us in Türkiye must be aware that all steps taken to overcome these challenges will contribute not only to the city centers but also to the overall economy and the level of social well-being and peace in the country.
European Mobility Week provides a great opportunity for local governments worldwide, including Türkiye, to test new transportation methods and receive feedback from the public. This campaign offers significant opportunities to bring together different aspects of mobility and quality of life in cities, find creative solutions to reduce car usage, and experiment with new technologies.
Türkiye first participated in European Mobility Week in 2009 with only 2 municipalities. In 2020, this number increased to 539, reaching the leading participation figure across Europe, and in 2021, with the participation of 611 municipalities, it set a record among all participating countries.
The 2023 theme for European Mobility Week was "Save Energy." Türkiye set a record by participating with 630 cities and towns, engaging in the activities along with 2,663 towns and cities from 41 countries.
